Help: Mental Health Warning Signs

Help: Mental Health Warning Signs

This project is a requirement of the GOA Abnormal Psychology Course. Using the process of design thinking, a challenge in the world of mental health was identified, interviews and research were undertaken, and a solution prototype was developed. Below you will find information about the identified area of concern and my proposed solution. Please feel free to provide feedback on this prototype, using questions such as “How might we…”, “What if….?”, “I wonder….”, “I like…”, and “I wish.” Keep the comments positive, please. BACKGROUND:

Many people suffer from some type of mental disorder. Many people do not know the warning signs that some one around them has a disorder, and is struggling internally with it. Many people give warning signs that they are in need of help, but the people around them do not recognize them. When this happens many terrible things can occur unknowingly to their community. One in four people have some type of mental disorder, and it normally takes eight to ten years from the onset of the symptoms to the time of intervention. Along with that, in America, half of the Children aged 8 to 14 did not receive treatment for the mental illness they are living with, and 60% of Adults did not receive treatment for their mental illness.

THE CHALLENGE:

My identified challenge is trying to get people more aware of the warning signs of mental health challenges in their community. The statistics that I have stated above show that a large portion of all communities suffer from a mental illness and never receive treatment. The statistic that states there is an average of 8 to 10 years for someone to receive help from the time symptoms begin needs to change. People in general need to be more educated on the warning sings in order to help those around them Many people will not attend seminars and do not want to read on the subject. I saw this challenge when a person close to me that I do not see regularly was struggling. I saw marks on her arms and wished I saw her more because I would have been able to help her earlier. I realized that if the people that surrounded her every day knew more, they could have helped her sooner. This challenge is worth seeking a solution so people that are able to get the help that they need before they take certain measures.

THE SOLUTION:

My solution is to make an Instagram page that educates people of the warning signs of mental illnesses. Most people go on the social media platform multiple times a day, and most people unconsciously scroll through different profiles. Following the page would be of no inconvenience and will provide substantial information in order to inform the community of the warning signs. The Instagram username for my solution is: MentalHealthHelp23

WHAT’S NEXT?

I would love if you could all provide me with feedback about my project. Feel free to ask any questions and I will answer them all. In order to give good feedback with Design Thinking use phrases such as, “What if….? How might we….? I wonder…..?”

My next steps will be talking to psychiatrists and other mental health professionals on the warning signs of mental health and how they can be identified. The creation of the Instagram page and posting will be the next steps of my project. The audience can get involved and help with my process by directing me to good sources of pictures and sayings that I can post to help.
