Energy Footprints and the Way to Change the Fate of our Planet

Fact:

We need to be more conscious of our energy footprint,  and we need to educate ourselves on our energy access and consumption. It is imperative for the children of the future to learn about our energy footprint.

There are many things that my community can do in order to start reducing our energy footprint but I firmly believe that we should start simply by raising awareness. I am currently joining forces with fellow activists/students at my school, with the mission of educating our classmates about our own local energy profile/footprint.  How much does the average person in my community actually know about the world’s energy crisis?

What is an “Energy Footprint?”:

Everyone in this world has their own unique “footprint,” whether it be socially, economically, or energy-wise. An “energy footprint” is simply what people leave behind in their “wake” of humanity. Our use of energy leaves it mark.  CO2 emissions and electrical grid usage are two factors that go in to our unique footprints. Every action that you affects the fate of the planet and this can be a problem.

Let’s begin by looking at energy poverty — the lack of access to adequate energy sources. 

According to the IEA 17 percent of the global population lacks access to electricity. That is around 1.2 billion people. In addition to the lack of access to electricity a whopping 38 percent of the global population lacks clean cooking facilities due to lack of affordable energy. That is around 2.7 billion people.

So, What is my Mission?:

My mission is to educate and raise awareness of my community’s energy footprint in order to start making an early impact on our future as a planet.

What you Need to Know: 

The purpose of this survey was primarily for my team to gather information about the average Windward School student and their basic knowledge of energy usage. It is now to be used as a way to keep gaining a more broad picture on what people really know.

Now that you have finished I would like you to look at previous responses in the tab shown. In my survey of 12 fellow students at Windward, I found the following:

First: The average Windward student knows that the energy sources in America are Petroleum and Coal

Second: Just about half of the average student realizes how much energy is really being used per year in their own homes

Third: People do not seem to understand what they are doing that uses so much energy

Finally: People realize that the problem at hand needs to be fixed and they can come up with ideas of how to start doing that, but they simply have not attempted any of their solutions

Bringing it Local:

My state of California is leading the United States in sustainable energy use. After reforms set in place in 2015 solar power accounted for around 8.02 percent of California’s total energy production according to government surveys. In that same year it was recorded that 7.1 percent came from hydroelectric power, 6.08 percent came from geothermal energy, 3.22 percent came from biomass and waste to energy programs, and 6.1 percent came from wind powered electricity. California is right on par with its major competitors in the market for now sustainable energy sources.   

My Plan of Action:

Preliminary research and construction of a base plan:

  1. Contact the head of service at my high school about a teacher/advisor to oversee the “Club” that i am creating and about a budget creation and possible donations
  2. Contact the dean of students at my high school in order to discuss plans for an energy fair and learn about my school’s energy footprint
  3. Create a participant base at the next clubs fair
  4. Create a mission statement/list of goals for an energy fair

 

Presentation and Organization:

  1. Present all of the above to the Student Leadership Board (SLB) and start interviewing small groups of students about their knowledge

      6. Give an assembly presentation on the importance of reducing our energy footprint

 

Building an “education arsenal:”

  1. Build a compilation of the entire club’s energy research
  2. Work with the graphic design team at my school to make advertisements such as flyers, shirts, brochures, etc.

 

Final Product!!:

  1. Host the energy fair with many tents, games, and quizzes dedicated to the education of the reduction of our school’s energy footprint

    10. Create a team of 4 or 5 to raise money and start implementing public works projects into our community like solar panels and rainwater collectors

 

 

 

We can not change the past, but we can certainly shape the future. This is my goal. I want to work towards a better future for myself and my community and I challenge you all to do the exact same.
