Health Care for the Mentally Ill

This project is a requirement of the GOA Abnormal Psychology Course. Using the process of design thinking, a challenge in the world of mental health was identified, interviews and research were undertaken, and a solution prototype was developed. Below you will find information about the identified area of concern and my proposed solution. Please feel free to provide feedback on this prototype, using questions such as “How might we…”, “What if….?”, “I wonder….”, “I like…”, and “I wish.” Keep the comments positive, please. Mental illness has always been of a specific interest to me. Coming from a family where mental illness has been apart of our daily lives I have always been particularly interested in the remedies for curing mentally ill patients. Specifically, my aunt who suffers from severe depression and anxiety and other mental disorders moved to Germany only to discover the wonderful health care opportunities they have for her. Although we miss her dearly, she would not be able to move back to the United States because of the lack of mental health care that they offer compared to Germany. When we were given the opportunity to learn more about any problem involved in mental illness the idea of health care immediately jumped out at me. I wanted to learn more about how I could help my aunt and others like her.

The challenge for my topic is simple. People simply are not accessing the health care that they need for their mental illnesses.Citizens of the United States who are struggling with mental illness but cannot afford treatment need to aware of the options that are open to them and the treatment they can receive without money. Because of the difficulty for people who cannot afford treatment to access health care, mental health patients are not getting the care that they desperately need. They are suffering greatly because they cannot afford treatment and that is not fair.

My solution is an app that is accessible for people who have mental illnesses and can access information about the treatments that are available to them. The app is called BrainBuddy and first each person will be asked specific questions about themselves which will lead them to available health care for each patient. In addition to this, each person will be given numbers and websites to visit if they are feeling distressed and cannot get the help they need. I chose an app because in today’s society even if you cannot afford health care, it is likely that you have access to some sort of technology equipment. Therefore, I thought the app would be the easiest and most effective way for people to access information.

My next step is developing my app more and having more free options for people who need help. In order to do this I need to do a lot more research on what’s available for people with mental disorders. Such ideas could include free therapy, websites, calming techniques, and a number to call if you need help. There are so many things that I can include to help people with mental illness and my next step is to learn more about these options.

I would like to know how I could make my app better overall. How might I make this app more accessible to people and more helpful to people seeking help?
